This happened! Xiaomi has finally made English localization of its Yi action camera app. The other day I complained on Twitter that the application was updated, but still did not receive the translation. However, I haven't even launched the application until now. Apparently, these three lines of hieroglyphs said the opposite. Or maybe this is an undocumented bun.
For those who are not aware or have forgotten, I remind you that Xiaomi has released a very decent analogue of GoPro, which can be bought in Chinese stores for only $80. A set with a branded monopod - about $100.
The camera came to me on May 15, but the only thing I was able to do in the Chinese application was update the firmware and set the resolution. I didn’t have enough strength and enthusiasm to translate the rest of the countless settings. But now what a beauty! :)
I took screenshots in the hope of recognizing it through Google Translate, but I quickly got tired of it.
Before connecting the camera for the first time, you need to download new firmware for it from the iPhone application. This can only be done via WiFi.
Then you need to turn on WiFi on the camera with the button on the side. Launch the app on your iPhone and press the capture button. The camera will find the firmware and update.
Please note - the camera just sat idle for 10 days and lost almost 40% of its charge.
I ordered a camera in such a cheerful color (matches my ski suit) with a branded monopod. And for good reason. It is made quite well. Now there is a sealed box on sale for $20, which is also on its way to me.

Camera application - Yi Camera
All other camera features are available through the app on your smartphone. Although there are not many of them. It is possible that the functionality will expand over time. In the meantime, the application allows you to configure photo and video shooting modes, shooting quality, settings for the camera itself, and visual display of the image from the matrix. The screenshot below shows how the application works in Photo mode.
The main part of the screen is occupied by the preview area from the camera matrix, under which the resolution at which the shooting will be taken is indicated. At the bottom of the camera control button, and at the very bottom there is a status line that reflects the battery level of the phone and camera and the signal level via WiFi.
In Video mode, the application looks about the same.
There is also a Snapshot mode, you can take quick pictures; only one resolution is available: 640X480. A strange mode with an unclear purpose.

Video settings block:
- Quality - sets the shooting quality,
- Time stamp - date and time on video,
- Resolution - shooting resolution,
- Standart - video standard (PAL/NTSC),
- Metering mode - exposure measurement mode,
Photo - Photo mode settings
Photo mode settings block:
- Resolution - shooting resolution;
- Default Photo mode - default shooting mode, you can select: normal - normal mode, self-timer - shooting mode with a timer delay, Time lapse - frame shooting mode, with a specified interval, Burst - burst mode;
- Camera defaulf start mode - default mode for turning on the camera, photo or video;
- Time stamp - date and time on the photo.
Camera - Camera settings

- Preview - turn on/off pedagogical preview;
- Auto low light - this mode turned out to be inactive for me, so I don’t know what it is :)
- Loop recording - recording in a circle, DVR mode;
- Lens rectification - correction of lens curvature, removes the “Fish-eye” effect;
- Auto turn on WiFi with device - automatically turns on the WiFi module when you turn on the camera;
- Buzzer volume - volume of sound signals;
- WiFi settings - WiFi module settings block, you can set the device name, password and other operating modes without a wired connection;
- LED mode - indicator operating mode, all on, all off;
- Camera clock - setting date and time;
- Auto power off - automatically turns off the camera when inactive after a specified interval.
Devices - Device information block
- Model - the name of the model, it turns out it is called YDXJ_v22;
- Serial number - serial number;
- Firmware version - firmware version;
- SD card - information about the flash drive, shows how much is occupied and allows you to format it;
- Find camera - camera search button; when pressed, the camera starts to emit a sound signal. A useful thing for finding a quad that has fallen not far into the tall grass;
- Restore factory settings - reset all settings to factory settings.
We got acquainted with the capabilities of the software, configured the camera as we like, and can use it. Of course, it’s not very convenient to take out a smartphone, launch an application, connect to the camera in order to change its operating mode or the quality of shooting. This is long and inconvenient, and the application often freezes or does not want to connect to the camera. In general, Syoma has a shortcoming here, and Prokhor’s small LCD display solves this problem well.
The camera's capabilities can be easily accessed using an app on your smartphone or tablet. Of course, there are not too many of them, but it is quite possible that after some time the set of functions will increase. The majority of the space is occupied by real-time video from the device’s matrix. Below is the resolution that will be used for video recording. In the general settings of the camera, you can turn on or off the preview mode and the DVR mode (when video is recorded in a circle). Lens rectification can correct the fish-eye effect caused by a wide-angle lens. You can also set wireless networks to turn on automatically when you start the camera. It is possible to adjust the volume of sound alerts, Wi-Fi operating modes, set the time and date, select the operating mode of the LEDs, and turn off the camera after a while when inactive. You can view device information, serial number, model name, operating system version. You can also view the free space on the flash card and format it if necessary.
The Find camera function allows you to find your camera. You just need to hold down the corresponding key and the device will emit a beep.
You can also return the settings to the original ones using the Restore factory settings item.
