Where are programs to autorun in Windows 7. Computer help

Unnecessary programs interfere with the user every time the computer starts. You have to wait and waste time, and sometimes they are simply not needed at all. I will provide instructions on how to disable them. This will significantly reduce the boot time of your computer.

Attention! Some programs may return to startup when you turn them on ( for example, utorrent).

To avoid this, you need to check their settings and remove autoloading.

You can see all the methods not only in the article, but also in the video. Everything is clearly demonstrated there. However, the article has some nuances.

Disable via Start menu

There is a special folder that contains files that run every time you turn on the computer. Typically, programs are added there themselves during installation if they are configured to do so. They may not be here, but it’s still worth checking.

Go to Start >> All Programs >> Startup. And delete the unnecessary ones by right-clicking and delete.

In this example, only skype is launched from this folder. Only the main programs located in this folder are displayed here. To disable others ( usually they are in the registry) it is better to use other methods.

Disabling startup in system configurations

All popular versions of Windows have a built-in utility for system management. Using it, you can simply disable autoloading by unchecking the boxes. Usually this is enough to solve this problem.

You need to open the command line. Go to Start >> Run ( Win+R) and enter msconfig as in the image below.

Select the “Startup” tab and uncheck unnecessary programs. My program and antivirus automatically load.

After this, you will be prompted to restart your computer. This can be done later. There is no way to remove absolutely everything. Only the most basic ones. If this is not enough for you, then see the following methods.

Disabling in CCleaner

Unlike the methods above, here you can disable autoloading for applications. First, download the free CCleaner program, install and launch. Select the "Tools" category and the startup tab. Turn off or remove unnecessary programs as shown in the image below. I only left the antivirus.

Disabling makes the startup task inactive, and deleting it completely removes it. However, programs can still add a task themselves even after using delete.

Disabling in the registry

Everything here is done by hand. If you don’t want to do it by hand, then move on to the next method. There it is done much easier.

In the execution line write regedit and navigate to the directory:

  1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Then a list of startup tasks will appear. Each line will refer to a separate program. Remove the unnecessary ones as in the image below.

Take a closer look at the path:

  1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - branch for all users.
  2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER—The branch for the user you are on.

If this is not enough, then the following method should help.

Disabling using the autorun utility

The utility allows you to conveniently work with the registry and disable startup in just 1 click. Its capabilities include disabling not only programs, but also various dll libraries, system services, device drivers and, in general, everything that loads automatically. Download it and. No installation required.

Run the autoruns or autoruns64 file depending on your system version and accept the license agreement. Other files run it in the execution line.

Now its interface will appear in front of you. Here, select the “Everything” tab and simply uncheck unnecessary programs. All possible startup objects will be shown here.

Remove only what you know! Disabling important system libraries or services may cause your computer to become unstable.

After that, simply close the utility. There is no need to save anything. It will correct the values in the registry itself immediately after adding or removing a checkmark. You won't have to do anything manually.

It also highlights lines in different colors:

  1. Yellow - present in startup tasks, but no files were found. They will not be able to start automatically.
  2. Red - files without description and without author. It could be viruses ( but that's not always the case).

Information about the file is displayed below. Weight, location and more. Individual tabs indicate the location of objects. You can tinker and turn off a lot of unnecessary and unnecessary things ( everyone is different). The main thing is to read about what you are disabling.

How many programs do you have in startup?

As you use the Windows system, it takes much longer to load than before. There are several reasons why the system takes longer to boot over time - Windows errors, hardware wear, low free space, and others. But the main reason is that in addition to the system, third-party programs are also loaded, which significantly load the system login. In this article we will look at autorun programs in Windows 7 and other versions, why it is needed, where to find it and how to remove autorun programs in Windows 7, 8, 10 and programs that will allow you to get more than system utilities.

Startup in Windows 7: how, where, why and why

A big problem for users is created by programs that launch with the system and they have to wait quite a long time for the system to fully load before they can start using it comfortably. A certain setting is responsible for the automatic launch of programs - autoload or autorun. Among them there can be useful, useless, and dangerous applications, so you need to know exactly what to disable and what to leave. We will teach you how to enable and disable autorun programs in Windows 7, as well as how to add the necessary programs to autorun when you turn on your computer in Windows 7.

Let's start with the basics - how to open and configure startup programs on Windows 7. There are several ways to do this, ranging from simple to slightly more complex.

Via the System Configuration window

Users are interested in disabling program autorun in Windows 7, but what is the easiest way to do it? will help you "System configuration".

Settings "System configuration" allows you to obtain a significant amount of information not only about the download (tab and General), but will allow you to understand what else is downloaded along with the system.

To open a window "System configuration", press the key combination “Win + R” and to configure autorun programs in Windows 7 you will need the msconfig command. Or, in Windows search, enter the word configuration (see image).

The most interesting tab in this window for us, among other things, is the tab in "Task Manager".

In this window we can see the name of the program, manufacturer, as well as its location. Disabling from autorun is done by unchecking the corresponding box next to the program name.

Through the Startup folder

The most convenient option, if you need to add any program to startup when you turn on the computer in Windows 7, is to directly add it to the Startup folder. To open this folder, go to the following location:

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Also, there is another way. Press the key combination “Win+R” and enter the command shell:startup.

It is worth noting that shortcuts are stored here that are launched along with the system. For example, I added 2 files - Yandex Browser and Autoruns. Yandex Browser is just an application shortcut that I transferred from the desktop, and Autoruns is a full-fledged utility that does not require additional files other than the executable (.exe format).

When transferring executable files, the application itself will not work at startup. This is a standard mistake for newbies.

It is necessary to transfer the Application Shortcut, which will link to the working executive file of the program and work correctly and launch at startup.

Also! After adding the desired program, it will appear in the startup list of System Configuration.

Via the registry

Another convenient way that will allow you to enter and change the startup of programs in Windows 7 is through the registry editor.

The registry is a kind of database of all settings and parameters, from where applications and the system itself understand that specific software is associated with a specific file or action. For autorun, there is its own so-called branch, where you can control the download.

To open "Registry Editor", press the key combination “Win + R” and enter the command regedit.

To find the branch you are interested in, follow the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

It is worth noting that this is not the only branch, but the basis for this system.

In this thread, there are several parameters that link to applications or pages on the network (is this a virus or advertising). The value of each parameter indicates where a particular application or virus refers to. For example, browsers link to their update checker, but viruses can link anywhere.

To add an application to startup using the Registry Editor, call the context menu and create "String parameter". You can call it any name, but its value must refer to the application you want to add. In this case, it makes no difference whether it is a program or a shortcut.

We looked at system methods for autorunning Windows 7 programs, how to disable them and where. But there are also third-party applications that can help you with this.

CCleaner

The most famous software for optimization and cleaning of garbage. It has enormous functionality not only for cleaning, but also for optimizing the system and applications.

The functionality we are interested in is available in the “Windows” tab.

As you can see in the screenshot, you can remove, cancel and prevent unnecessary programs from autorunning for Windows 7/8/10, thanks to the “Enable”, “Disable” and “Delete” buttons.

Tabs "Scheduled tasks" And "Context menu" are also related to autorun, albeit indirectly. "Scheduled tasks"- actions that are launched according to a specific schedule or trigger. "Context menu"- software that is displayed in your context menu (for example, WinRar offers to unpack the archive when you right-click on it).

Ccleaner's functionality is really good, and there's a reason it's one of the most popular Windows optimization apps.

Sysinternals Autoruns

Autoruns is a utility from Sysinternals, acquired by Microsoft. It has excellent functionality, but a very poor interface. To work with this utility, you need knowledge at the level of a confident PC user with knowledge of standard registry branches. A novice PC user may inadvertently mess things up when working with Autoruns and will have to restore work in safe mode.

The utility allows you to find out about absolutely everything that will be loaded with the system - utilities, drivers, modules and much more. That's why Autoruns is highly valued among professionals.

On the topic of this article, we only need the “Logon” tab. This shows various branches related to automatic loading of applications and other modules.

The Options filters are very useful - Hide Windows Entries and Hide Microsoft Entries, which hide system modules that you do not want to disable for the system to function correctly.

Interesting filter Hide VirusTotal Clean Entries– which hides values that, in the opinion of the VirusTotal service, are clean and do not pose a threat. Dangerous or infected modules will be highlighted in red or pink.

Additionally

In this article, we showed where and how to view startup programs in Windows 7, but that’s not all. There are also methods to completely disable applications and its components. Disabling autorun does not always solve an application-specific problem. Therefore, you can additionally use the following small tips.

Via the Services tab

First, you need to go into Windows 7 program startup management using the msconfig command. Only this time we need the Services tab.

We will be presented with a complete list of system and third-party services. It is necessary to tick the "Do not display Microsoft services" to exclude system services from the list. This will display a complete list of third-party application services.

When analyzing for viruses and suspicious software, you should pay attention to unknown names, especially those without a manufacturer. If such occur, then the first thing you need to do is check with the search engines whether it is really a virus. It may well turn out to be a useful application, but without the signature of the developer.

As a last resort, you can disable all services to check the operation of the system or disable them one by one if the goal is to identify an erroneous service.

Important! Antiviruses cannot be disabled so easily; they have a self-defense module that will not allow you to disable the antivirus, even if you have Administrator rights. It must be disabled in the settings.

Task Manager

If you want to limit the activity of a specific program, without deleting it and removing it from startup did not help, we advise you to check "Task Manager". As mentioned earlier, the scheduler creates events for programs for a specific time, date, action or trigger.

To open "Task Manager" press Win+R and enter the command control schedtasks. The Task Scheduler Library folder will contain the main triggers for third-party software. You can analyze all the actions that lead to the launch of the program and disable it.

All of the above functions are also available from third-party applications, such as CCleaner or Autoruns, which were also mentioned in this article.

Have a great day!

  1. 1. Remove shortcuts from the Startup folder (suitable for XP and Windows 7, but does not always help);
  2. 2. Disable autorun in Windows 7 using the built-in msconfig utility;
  3. 3. Disable startup programs for Windows 8;
  4. 4. Disable startup using the CCleaner program (universal method for all OS).
1. Normal method for Windows 7

Opening "Start" - "All Programs" where we are looking for the folder (Startup - in English). The shortcuts placed here automatically launch the corresponding programs when Windows starts, right-click on the unnecessary ones and click "Delete".

The method is simple, but this does not include all programs that start when the PC starts.

2. Disable autorun programs for Windows 7 using msconfig

In addition to the previous folder, there is also a registry in which startup programs are located. The easiest way to remove tasks from it is to click "Win"+"R" and enter in the line "msconfig" and press "OK".

In the window that opens, go to the tab. By unchecking the boxes next to programs we don’t need, we remove them from autorun.

Then press the button "OK", a window will appear asking you to restart your PC, but you don’t have to do this.

Using this method, you can disable any program from startup, but you need to know all their names because there are no shortcut icons, and you can inadvertently disable something you need.

3. Disable startup programs for Windows 8

Right-click on the taskbar and in the context menu that appears, click "Task Manager".

In the window that opens, go to the tab, select the program we need and click the button below "Disable".

A very simple method that even an inexperienced PC user can handle.

4. Disabling startup using CCleaner

Startup programs in Windows is a tool required to automatically enable software when the operating system starts. For example, when you install an antivirus, it is automatically “injected” into startup and turns on immediately as soon as the operating system is launched. This was done so that the antivirus always remains on guard of the system.

However, the programs you need do not always “settle” in startup. For example, these could be ubiquitous instant messengers - when installing the program, it is not possible to disable autorun, so the messenger begins to load along with the system, which is quite annoying.

Today I will tell you how to view programs that are in startup and, if necessary, disable them.

Click the “Start” button and in the “Search programs and files” line, write the word msconfig (without quotes or anything else).

A window will appear. In it, select the “Startup” tab - in it you will see all the startup items.

Using this menu you can disable any of the processes. For example, if you need to disable the messenger, select its name and uncheck the box next to it, remembering to click OK. I have already talked about it in more detail.

The second method is to use third-party utilities, which, among other things, show a list of programs that load with Windows. For example, it could be such a wonderful program as . I’ve talked about it many times, so let me briefly remind you that this is a free utility for cleaning and optimizing Windows operating systems.

Download the program, install it on your computer and run it. Click on the “Tools” button, then select the “Startup” section and see a list of programs. Moreover, the most interesting thing is that here you can also see those plugins and add-ons that run in browsers.

Where is the Startup folder located?

The easiest way to view the contents of the Startup folder is through the Start menu. Click on the "Start" button and select "All Programs" - "Startup".

Please note that not all programs that start when Windows starts are displayed in the Startup folder.

In addition, you can find the contents of the specified folder at C:\Users\YOUR COMPUTER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.

It's empty here. You can see various programs in your home.

Hello, dear guests and readers of the site! Today we will talk about how to disable autorun programs in Windows 7. I have already raised this topic in the article setting up Windows XP startup, which you will find.

If you have installed many different programs on your computer, then naturally you will need to remove some of them from startup. Firstly, to speed up the startup of Windows 7, and not wait until all programs are launched by the system. Secondly, so that after the system starts, unused programs do not consume computer resources.

Easily remove a program from Windows 7 startup.

A well-known method by which you can remove some programs from Windows 7 startup is the “Startup” folder. Everything that is in this folder is launched automatically by the system. To open this folder, go to the Start menu, then to the All Programs section, where the Startup folder is located. In my case, there is only one program, to remove it, you need to right-click and select “Delete” from the drop-down menu.

However, as I said, not all programs can be removed this way, so we move on to the next method.

How to disable autorun programs in Windows 7 using msconfig?

In order to remove programs from startup, use the Windows 7 utility, to launch which you need to open the start menu and enter “msconfig” in the search bar.

There is another way to launch the utility, by pressing the “Win + R” keys. After launching the “Run” window, enter the word “msconfig” there.

As a result of these actions, the “System Configuration” window will be launched, in which you need to go to the “Startup” tab.

There you will see the entire list of programs that are registered in the startup section of the Windows 7 registry. In this list, select the programs to disable, leave only those that are necessary, and uncheck the rest. In my example, you can disable only one item, the rest of the necessary drivers for Windows 7. Click “Ok”.

How to disable autorun programs by manually editing the Windows 7 registry?

This method is more complicated, so be careful :). In order to edit the Windows registry, you need to press the key combination “Win + R” and enter the word “Regedit” in the window that opens.

As a result, a registry editor window will open, in which you need to go to the startup section. To do this you need to go to:

"Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"

Find a program that starts automatically when Windows starts, uninstall it by right-clicking and selecting “Uninstall.” In this example, there are no programs to uninstall.

How to disable autorun of programs using Autoruns?

Now let's look at the best way to disable programs from startup. This is a free Autoruns program, which you can find by going to the official website at: technet.microsoft.com

The program is very small, only about 600kb. However, it is capable of finding all kinds of places from which something can be launched. The program does not require installation, so we just run it.

We don’t touch the top part of the program, because all these tabs are located in order in the middle part of the program, just below.

In this area, you can find an unnecessary program, then simply uncheck it, thereby disabling it from the Windows 7 startup list.

Some lines are marked in yellow; these are programs that have already been removed from startup. Programs from an unknown manufacturer are marked in pink, which worries Autoruns.

That's all for me on the topic of how to disable autorun programs in Windows 7? I would be glad if you share your experience in disabling autorun programs in the comments.

Good luck everyone! See you again on the pages of my blog.

As usual, there is a video at the end of the article.
