How to find out what RAM is installed in your computer. How to find out how much RAM is on your computer? How to find out the amount of RAM on Windows 7

It is one of the main components of any computer. The amount of RAM depends on the number of programs that the user can work with simultaneously. The more memory, the more programs you can run without slowing down your computer's performance.

In addition, some programs and computer games require a certain amount of memory to function properly. Therefore, inexperienced users very often ask how to see how much RAM is on the computer. We will consider this issue in the framework of this article.

Method number 1. Computer properties.

The easiest way to see how much RAM is on your computer is to open the computer properties window. This can be done in several ways. For example, if your work computer has a “My Computer” icon (an icon, not a shortcut), then you can click on it and select “Properties”.

You can also open the computer properties window through "". To do this, open the “Control Panel” and go to the “System and Security – System” section.

Another option is the Windows key combination + Pause/Break. Just press this key combination in any window, and the window we need will open in front of you.

After you have opened the computer properties window, turn your attention to the “Installed memory (RAM)” item. The amount of your RAM will be indicated here.

Method number 2. Task Manager.

If you have Windows 8 or Windows 10, then you can see how much RAM is on your computer using the Task Manager. To do this (for example, using the key combination CTRL + Shift + Esc). After that, go to the “Performance” tab and open the “Memory” section there. Here in the upper right corner of the window it will be indicated how much RAM is installed on your computer.

Method number 3. Special programs.

You can also see how much RAM is on your computer using special programs designed to view computer characteristics. For example, you can use the program. Launch this program on your computer and go to the “Memory” section. This tab will indicate how much RAM is on the computer. You can also see other RAM characteristics here.

Method number 4. BIOS.

If your computer does not yet have an operating system installed or does not start, then you can see the amount of RAM using. Go to the BIOS and examine its contents. One of the BIOS sections should contain information about the computer.

Usually it indicates the processor model, its clock speed and the amount of RAM.

RAM is a volatile memory that contains temporary processor program data. The size of RAM affects the ability to simultaneously work in several programs.

How can I find out the amount of RAM in Windows 7?

Below are several ways to find out how much RAM is in a PC or laptop if Windows 7 is installed on it.

The standard steps for Windows 7 are as follows:

  1. In the menu that opens, find “System” and “Installed memory/RAM” - the amount of RAM is displayed here.

You can also use the following algorithm:

  1. Click “Start”;
  2. Log in to the “Control Panel”;
  3. Find "System".

PC parameters are indicated here: operating system version, hardware models, amount of installed RAM.

There is another easy method to enter the “System” menu:

  1. Right-click on “My Computer”
  2. Click on “Properties”.

How to find out how much RAM a PC is using on Winodws 7?

To find out the amount of RAM used, you need to do the following:

Obtaining detailed information about your computer's RAM

To see detailed information about the RAM used by Windows, you need to open the command line. It will allow you to find out the speed parameters and capacity of all memory modules.

The following steps are required:

Column Explanation

The “BankLabel” displays a list of slots where the RAM modules are located. “Capacity” shows the size of all of them in bytes. Also in “DeviceLocator” is a list of slots. “Speed” shows the speed of all modules individually.

Why doesn't Windows 7 see all of the computer's installed RAM?

This issue can be clarified by analyzing the following reasons:

  1. In the case of 32-bit Windows 7, which uses no more than 4 gigabytes of RAM. Even if you install more RAM than this value, the 32-bit version of Windows will see only 4. How many bits the operating system is on your computer can be found in the “System” menu. To make higher RAM available, Windows must be upgraded to 64-bit.
  2. Conflict of RAM modules due to their operation at different speeds, i.e. do not work correctly in dual-channel mode. It is necessary to determine the operating speed of each of them using the command line (instructions for its use are given in the previous section of the article);
  3. If a module does not function correctly, the OS cannot see it. You need to run a test using the freely available application "MEMTEST";
  4. If there is a conflict between the RAM hardware and the computer's motherboard, Windows will not see them. In order to determine the type of RAM suitable for your computer, you need to study the instructions that came with your PC hardware.

According to Wikipedia, RAM is a volatile part of a computer memory system that temporarily stores the input, output, and intermediate data of a processor program. The amount of RAM determines the number of tasks that can be simultaneously performed under the operating system.

Purely theoretically, the more RAM, the better, since it will allow you to run several “hungry” applications at once. Moreover, if you consider that even one running browser with a couple of open tabs can easily consume more than 1 GB of RAM, the words about its volume seem true. But in practice, 4 GB will be enough for the user, and even more so if the memory capacity reaches 8 GB.

Today I will tell you how to find out the amount of RAM in your computer or laptop. Windows 7 is used as an example.

Click on the “Start” button, then go to “Control Panel”. Here we find the “System” section.

Once in the desired section, you can find basic information about your PC, including the Windows version, processor model and, of course, the amount of RAM. I highlighted it in the screenshot.

This is the simplest and most convenient way. By the way, you can get to the “System” section in another way. To do this, you need to find the “Computer” icon on your desktop, right-click on it and select “Properties”.

In order to find out how much memory is currently being used, you will have to use. If you remember, I recently told you how you can launch it. The easiest way is to simultaneously press the Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys (relevant for Winodws 7). Alternatively, press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination and select Task Manager from the list of options.

Open the “Performance” tab - this is where you can see how much memory is available, how much is available at a given second, how much is cached and how much is free.

I hope my simple instructions helped you.

If you need to find out how much random access memory (RAM) is installed on your computer or laptop, as well as get additional information about it: current frequency, number of occupied RAM slots, type, model or voltage - this can be done using both the built-in system tools and using third-party free programs (in the latter case, you can get more detailed information).

This guide details various methods for determining how many GB of RAM is installed on a PC or laptop, as well as some additional information that may be useful. If you are interested in how to find out how much memory your computer supports, I touched on this topic in a separate article: How to increase the RAM of a laptop (also relevant for desktop computers). Also useful: Is it possible to install RAM of different sizes, frequencies, voltages.

  • How to find out how many GB of RAM is on your computer using Windows
  • Determining the amount of RAM using third-party programs
  • View information about installed memory in BIOS/UEFI
  • Video instruction

Windows 10, 8.1, and Windows 7 provide simple utilities to view your computer's settings, including hardware specifications related to the amount of RAM. First, about the method for all latest versions of the OS, and then a separate method for Windows 10.

More detailed information regarding the hardware characteristics of the installed RAM is not available here. But often this information is enough for a novice user.

If you have Windows 10 installed, then you can use the following method and get more detailed information about the installed RAM memory:

Keep in mind that information about the number of used slots may be incorrect (especially for laptops): sometimes, if there are only 2 RAM slots, the system “sees” 4.

Third-party programs for determining the amount of memory and other characteristics of a computer are good because they allow you to obtain more detailed information about various RAM parameters. There are many different programs for viewing computer characteristics, but in the context of this article I would recommend using the free CPU-Z, which you can download as an installer or portable version in a ZIP archive from the official website https://www.cpuid.com/softwares /cpu-z.html

After starting the program, go to the “Memory” tab. Here in the “General” section you will see basic information about the installed memory (I specifically do not touch on some parameters, as they are unnecessary in the context of the article):

  • Type - memory type.
  • Size - the total size of the RAM.
  • Channel - in which mode the memory operates. Typically: Single (single-channel) or Dual (two-channel).
  • NB Frequency - the current frequency of the memory controller (not the same as the memory frequency and not really for beginners). Sometimes the item may not be active (on older systems) and may not display information.

You can see the current memory frequency in the Timings - DRAM Frequency section. It may “jump” and be half the stated frequency in the specifications of your RAM module - this is normal (we get the frequency twice as high due to the dual-channel mode, but this field will still display the actual frequency), a small a smaller difference from “round” numbers is also normal and depends mostly on the processor of the computer or laptop.

Separately, on the SPD tab in CPU-Z, by selecting a specific slot at the top left, you can get information about the characteristics of each installed memory module: from the main one (for beginners) - type, maximum frequency, manufacturer, model of the memory module (in the Part Number section) , memory module size, voltage (below, in the table under Voltage).

There are other programs that provide equally detailed information. One of the popular, but not completely free, is AIDA64.

Information about the installed RAM can also be found in the BIOS (UEFI) of your PC or laptop (see How to enter BIOS/UEFI in Windows 10).

In BIOS of different manufacturers and different versions, this information is located in different locations: sometimes on the main page (Main), sometimes in separate sections like System Information or RAM (DRAM) Configuration. On a PC, these sections usually contain information about the amount of installed memory, frequency and voltage (as well as additional information and settings).

And a simple video that clearly shows the first two ways to find out how much RAM is installed on your system.

I hope the instructions were helpful. If anything is not completely clear, I look forward to your comments.

  1. Open the context menu of the “My Computer” shortcut (right-click on it once). Next, select "Properties".

As a result, a window will appear indicating the size of available RAM, the type of operating system (for example, 32-bit), etc.

  1. An alternative method is to go through Start.

Start – Run.

In the window that appears, manually enter msinfo32 and press Enter.

  1. Another method that is based on a combination of function keys.
  • Press “Win + R” and enter dxdiag in the window that opens.
  • A new window will appear. Pay attention to the “Memory” line. The physical amount of computer memory will be indicated there.
  • All methods describe the free number of Gigabits on your PC.

But how you can find out exactly the RAM of your laptop or computer and analyze its additional characteristics, read below.

I want to immediately warn you that you cannot do this without using third-party applications and utilities. One such program is Speccy. It allows you to access all the characteristics of the modules and boards that are currently connected to your PC.

The utility is free and readily available for downloading from the Internet.

After downloading the program, proceed with installation. The utility is installed using standard methods, without any particular difficulties.

To check what RAM is installed on your PC, do the following:

  1. Launch the program.
  2. Open the "RAM" section.

And then just read the information that interests you. Everything is described there in an accessible and understandable way. There are characteristics about DDR type, number of channels, volume and frequency. You can also see what percentage of RAM is being used at a given minute and many other useful characteristics. Based on these characteristics, you can decide whether you should

But here is the most direct way to find out the RAM of your computer. If you understand all the system hardware, then:

  • turn off the power to the system unit;
  • remove the cover;
  • take out the memory modules and read the characteristics you are interested in directly on them.

However, this method is only for experienced craftsmen, and not for beginners.

On a note! Recently, if you missed it, I told or. And I also spoke. Be sure to read and do not forget to leave comments on the articles.

That's all for me! Now you know for sure how to find out your computer's RAM. Please write your wishes and comments under the article. I also advise you to subscribe to new blog articles and receive something new directly to your email. I wish all my readers great health and peace!
